00:02 Quail Forever is an organization that's
00:05 concerned with
00:05 conservation and maintenance of wildlife
00:08 habitat
00:10 the chapter here in ventura has been
00:12 around since the mid 80s
00:15 and a few months ago we approached the
00:17 ventura botanical gardens about
00:19 installing
00:20 a wildlife water source on the
00:23 botanical gardens property and
00:27 the botanical gardens talked with us and
00:29 approved the project
00:31 and we looked at various sites and
00:34 finally selected the site where we
00:35 worked today
00:37 we began this morning at eight o'clock
00:40 so we started working by hand
00:42 and had worked down a little maybe a
00:45 foot
00:46 when we approached a contractor that was
00:50 working for the botanical gardens who
00:51 had a mini excavator
00:55 and once that hole was excavated we
00:58 began
00:59 refilling with material that had been
01:02 broken down
01:03 from large clods into smaller pieces so
01:06 that we could establish a base
01:08 inside the excavation for the water
01:12 tank it's a plastic water tank heavy
01:14 duty plastic water tank
01:16 that collects water during the rainy
01:18 season stores that water and allows
01:20 wildlife to access the water during the
01:23 dry season
01:24 and so we put dirt in to
01:28 establish the base for it leveled it out
01:31 as best we could and then we put in sand
01:34 uh to create a level base for the
01:37 guzzler
01:38 and we then put it in place
01:42 our next step will be to get water into
01:44 it
01:45 we don't expect rain for quite some time
01:47 so we want to
01:48 get some water into that so wildlife can
01:50 become accustomed to where it's located
01:52 and start using it
01:54 we did see some California or valley
01:56 quail
01:57 near the guzzler today so they will
02:00 undoubtedly start using it
02:02 that we've had bobcats mountain lions
02:05 coyotes
02:06 foxes squirrels
02:09 rabbits deer all kinds of wildlife that
02:13 use these water sources
02:15 there are somewhere between 60 and 80 of
02:18 these wildlife water sources
02:20 throughout Ventura County and on a
02:22 little bit into Santa Barbara county
02:25 and San Luis Obispo and Kern counties as well

00:12 fire last December the freshman students
00:15 also spread mulch around surviving
00:17 plants in Grant Park this is all part of
00:20 a partnership with the city of Ventura
00:22 that began more than 10 years ago we've
00:24 had a lot of community members step up
00:26 over the past six months to help us but
00:29 this many kids with this much energy
00:31 gonna make a huge dent in kind of
00:33 getting the park back to where we want
00:35 it to be the incoming students are
00:37 participating in you got served during
00:40 New Student Orientation it's the
00:42 university's largest service-learning
