History

To create and maintain public gardens for the preservation, education, cultural contribution & enhancement of the entire community.

The mission of all botanic gardens is rooted in conservation of rare and endangered plants. This core objective is embedded in the very meaning of “botanic garden”. The mission of the Ventura Botanical Gardens is to create and maintain public gardens for the preservation, education, cultural contribution and enhancement of the entire community.

What exists today is the realization of the vision, sparked by a small group of Ventura residents first dreamed of late in 2005. They came together to formulate plans for a world-class botanical garden showcasing native flora and providing educational, recreational and cultural enhancement for the Ventura coastal community.

Grant Park, set in the foothills above Ventura’s City Hall, offered the perfect site. Its breathtaking 360-degree views encompass the coastline, mountains and lush agricultural greenery. After engaging with the community to develop our Master Plan vision, which includes gardens representing the earth’s five Mediterranean climate zones with public gathering areas and facilities for educational programs, botanic laboratories and conservation programs, and a range of amenities including dining facilities and event center. The Gardens also provides a natural canvas to showcase regional and international environmental sculpture, stonework and other visual arts.

Initially, we began building under a series of limited license agreements. Then in 2011, we engaged in a lease with the City of Ventura for 107 of the 109 acres of parkland. In 2015, a 40-year agreement was signed to create a public/private partnership with the City of Ventura.

The primary walkway, which serves as the garden's backbone, begins behind City Hall and climbs gently, providing a number of viewpoints with spectacular vistas of the city, the sea and the Channel Islands beyond. Simultaneously, we began acquiring and planting areas dedicated to conservation of plants from the five mediterranean climate regions of the world.

We began with the restoration of California native plant species. In late 2017, the Thomas fire burned the entire garden. In hindsight, choosing to focus on plants from our sister climate regions that were well adapted to fire, was a blessing. As our collection of plants regrew, we were able to expand the California, Chile, South Africa and Mediterranean garden areas rapidly due to the radical transformation of the land caused by the fire. As of 2026, approximately 50 acres are under cultivation, with an average density of 5,000 plants per acre. We actively manage the remaining acreage for the restoration of local plant communities, with over three miles of pathways and stairs now traversing the landscape.

In 2018, the Merewether Welcome Center was completed. It includes our Courtyard Gift Shop, an informational kiosk, and much-needed restrooms. In 2019, the Miriam Schwab Entrance Plaza opened, and in 2020, our new nursery was completed. In 2023, the California volcanic rock outcrop garden above Rotary Plaza began. In 2025, a new shade structure “The Fernery” and a large lookout deck were completed as part of an expansion of our Chilean garden. In 2025, construction began on the main pathways and planting of the Australian garden.

With over 3,000 members and annual visitation surpassing 65,000 in 2024, our growth is fueled by private donations, bequests, corporate sponsorships and grants. Our community includes Master Gardeners, biologists, business leaders and neighbors from all walks of life. We hope you’ll join us; by contributing today, you help preserve Ventura’s history and leave a lasting legacy for the future.

In addition to the walkway entrance behind City Hall, other unmarked entrances include Summit Drive, Ferro Drive and Brakey Road (map).
