Nature’s Spirits – Flight Of Our Ancestors

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Ventura Botanical Gardens presents Nature’s Spirits – Flight of Our Ancestors, September 15 through November 1, from 9am to 5pm.

Inspired by rich cultural traditions—including ancient Mayan mythology, which reveres hummingbirds as sacred messengers carrying notes from ancestors and loved ones—this mini exhibit transforms the gardens with a Day of the Dead-inspired backdrop of bold colors, striking silhouettes and autumn blooms. Encounter the colorful calaveras gigantes, or large decorative skulls, bringing a colorful presence to the gardens. Much of the art onsite was developed by volunteers, Ventura College art students and kids at the IDEA center on the westside.

Then, for one special night on Saturday, October 24, from 5pm to 8pm, visit VBG after dark. Savor the evening as a fortune teller, tucked inside a giant, hummingbird-inspired nest, peeks into your future. Warm up with traditional Mexican hot chocolate and cookies. The hot chocolate features Abuelita, the historic recipe created in 1939 in Mexico City by Fábrica de Chocolates La Azteca, offering an authentic taste of heritage in every spiced cup.

Please note for the evening opening, walkway access in the upper grounds will be closed. Activities are at the Welcome Center, Gift Shop, and Nursery, giving guests after-hours access for evening shopping and plant selections.

General admission is $15, with free admission for members and children accompanied by an adult.
